Club Marine Derwent BREAM Super Series Final Results

#464 - 0--bream--Club Marine Derwent BREAM Super Series Final Results--2009-03-07 13:55:51

#The first Ford Ranger Super Series event on Tasmanian soil went off with a blast as Spiro Spyropolous wrote his name into the record books in only his second ABT Qualifier. Winning the Club Marine event by a mere 205 grams his 15/15 limit of 16.865kg becomes the heaviest winning weight of bream to date. - With fine
conditions experienced over the long weekend, the Derwent River
didn't disappoint with yet another record for Tasmanian waters, the venue
eclipsing the old mark easily with 361 bream weighed in between 66 anglers for
355.51kg.  An awesome .99kg average for
those bruising black bream.

Spiro practice
fished - like most anglers on the Friday, but when others were pulling off the
water and Spiro had not found a fish, to his credit, he continued to plug away
until he scored a 43cm to the fork at the Bedlam Walls.

This became
his go to spot, using a Daiwa Luvias 4-8lb rod matched to a Daiwa Aegis 2004
reel spooled with 4lb Daiwa
PE and 4lb Famell fluorocarbon
leader.  His choice of lure was the
Bassday Kangoku shad in colour C66, an opaque body with an olive head.  Working a 70-80 metre stretch of bank, Spiro
would cast hard into the Bedlam rock walls.

"I used an
almost violent, erratic retrieve over the mussel encrusted rocks," he
explained.

Once the
tide turned and the fish in his honey hole went off the bite, Spiro moved up
river to the flats before the Bridgewater Bridge.   Using
the same Kangoku shad lure he was able to work the weed beds and flats and
collate a winning bag.

"I'm over
the moon to make the trip to Tassie and qualify for the Grand Final," said
Spyropolous.

"All I have
to do now is qualify at the upcoming Vic Bream event at Gippsland for the
Classic Championship, and can spend the week in Sydney fishing these two events," he concluded.

Second placed Steve Morgan came tantalisingly close to
chasing down the slowing Spyropolous, but lacked the weight required to take
the title. His 15/15, 16.66kg bag, though, did secure him his second Tasmanian
BREAM AOY title.

Morgan used two different tactics to tackle the Derwent.
Early in the morning on the top of the tide he threw Ayu Daiwa Presso minnows
into shallow water in Lindisfarne
Bay to secure an early
limit. These baits were weighted with lead strip to suspend head-up and avoid
most of the rocks and were fished with long pauses.

"Every bream grabbed the lure on the pause and screamed off
into deeper water," Morgan explained, "and it was important to get the fish
early, as the shallow fish only bit for a couple of hours."

Later, he changed up to a Daiwa Double Clutch deep diving
jerkbait to fish the shallow reefs in front of Berriedale.

"Especially on Monday, the calm conditions let me see the
upwellings from the reefs scattered throughout the bay. Those isolated patched
were loaded with bream and twitching the big jerkbait in their face was
irresistible - I landed around fifteen fish like this in the second half of the
session," Morgan continued. He was fishing in 3 to 6 feet of water.

His Presso gear consisted of a Miller-built Pro Lite Loomis
S842 rod, Daiwa Luvias 1003 reel and 3lb Yamatoyo Spinning Fluoro, while the
Double Clutch performed best on a Nories Finesse Sweeper rod and Daiwa Airity
1500 reel with 4lb fluorocarbon.

Morgan also landed the event's Big BREAM, a 1.655kg specimen
that ate a Double Clutch on the rock bar adjacent to the finish line at 1.30pm
on the Saturday.

"I think I've probably landed 200 bream in the Derwent over
the last few years, but that's the first one over 40cm I've caught, so I think
it was due," Morgan concluded.

Winning the
non boater champion title for the second year running was Plinio Taurian.  The local from Hobart was the only non boater to complete
his 10/10 limit, for 9.93kg, beating his closest rival by over 2kg.

Taurian
armed himself with a Nories Rockfish Bottom rod and Daiwa SOL 2500 with 4lb
Spinning Fluoro straight through.

His lure
choice was the Nories Laydown Minnow in BR63 and Daiwa Presso Minnow in Ayu.  Working these with an aggressive twitch and
long pause, he would aim at the front of rocky points to score his fish.

Later in
the day to upgrade, Taurian chose the soft plastic option of a 4" Gulp Sand Eel
in sardine rigged on a 1/20 TT #1 jighead.

"I would
cast hard to the edge and shake the plastic without retrieving, here I would
either hook up or pull in and cast out once more," he explained.

With the
Sponsor Bonus Program once again proving popular, Spiro Spyropolous claimed an
extra $250 for having a Mercury on the back of his Ranger.  Chris Seeto caught the biggest bream on an
Atomic Hardz to claim the Samurai rod prize and Andrew Krushka was first to
weigh in on Saturday wearing his Daiwa cap.

With a
successful Tasmanian leg now over, the anglers who competed from across Australia and Singapore can return home safely
and reminisce of the trophy black bream that crossed their paths.
